Expanded Top-level domain names.

ICANN is to receive a recommendation by the Domain Names Supporting Organization about expanding the top-level domain name structure. However, instead of the six to ten new generic top-level names the group originally considered, the group is expected to recommend only two or three new names. Two names have surfaced: .biz and .store.

Large companies with popular trademarks are unsure how the expansion will effect their famous names. Many of them have advocated eliminating trademarked names from availability, or allowing them to register first, before the public has an opportunity to register any names.

Canada's Privacy Bill C-6

Last week Canada's House Of Commons passed Bill C-6, better known as the ''Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.''

The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act ''establishes a right to the protection of personal information collected, used or disclosed in the course of commercial activities, in connection with the operation of a federal work, undertaking or business or interprovincially or internationally.''

The Act is designed ''to support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances . . .'' and promotes 10 basic principles:

* Accountability;
* Identifying Purposes;
* Consent;
* Limiting Collection;
* Limiting Use, Disclosure, and Retention;
* Accuracy;
* Safeguards;
* Openness;
* Individual Access; and
* Challenging Compliance.

Even if a data subject agrees to allow an organization to transfer their personal data to a third party, the Act prevents an organization from transferring data to other organizations that do not have ''comparable'' privacy policies. That includes an organization located in a third country, such as the United States.

Read Schedule 1 of the Act for a Great summary of the Act:
